5 Things Previous Owners Might Still Have Access To in Your New Home

Published 9 March 2026

You've just got the keys to your new Belfast home. Exciting times! But here's something most people forget. The previous owners might still be able to get in. It's not malicious. They just forgot to hand everything over.

We see this all the time. New homeowners assume they're secure. They're not. Here are 5 things you need to check immediately.

1

Spare Keys

This is the obvious one. But it's bigger than you think. The previous owners had keys. Their family had keys. The neighbours had spare keys. The dog walker. The cleaner. That friend who watered plants during holidays.

You have no idea how many keys are floating around. And you can't get them all back.

What to do: Change all exterior locks within the first week. It costs less than you think. And it gives you complete peace of mind.

2

Alarm Codes

Did the house come with an alarm system? Great for security. But the previous owners know the code. They might have shared it with others too. Some alarm systems also have master codes that can override yours.

Even if you've changed the code, older systems can have backdoors or default codes that still work.

What to do: Contact the alarm company. Register as the new owner. Ask them to reset the system completely and give you new master codes.

3

Garage Door Openers

Many Belfast homes have electric garage doors. The previous owners probably had multiple remotes. One in each car. Maybe a spare in a drawer. These still work after you move in.

Your garage connects to your house. If someone can open the garage, they're halfway inside.

What to do: Reset the garage door opener. Clear all programmed remotes and start fresh. Check your manual for instructions or call the manufacturer.

4

Smart Home Access

Smart locks. Smart doorbells. Security cameras. Heating controls. These are all connected to apps. The previous owners might still be logged in. They could watch your doorbell camera. Unlock your smart lock. See when you're home.

This sounds creepy. But usually, they've just forgotten to log out. Still, you don't want them having access.

What to do: Factory reset every smart device. Change WiFi passwords. Set up fresh accounts. For smart locks, we recommend professional installation to ensure security.

5

Hidden Key Locations

Under the doormat. In a fake rock. Behind the drainpipe. Inside the meter box. Previous owners often hid spare keys around the property. They might have told friends and family where to find them.

These hidden keys are still there. And other people know exactly where to look.

What to do: Search your property thoroughly. Check all the common hiding spots. Remove any keys you find. And again - changing the locks makes hidden keys worthless.

The Simple Solution

You can spend days tracking down alarm codes and smart device passwords. Or you can do one thing that solves most problems: change your locks.

New locks mean:

  • All old keys become useless
  • Hidden keys won't work
  • You know exactly who has access
  • Modern locks offer better security
