Most Belfast homeowners think their front door is secure. Most of the time, they're wrong.
After hundreds of locksmith callouts across Belfast, I've seen the same weaknesses over and over — on doors in every area, in every type of property. The good news is that most of them are cheap and easy to fix.
Here's what to check.
1. Does your cylinder stick out past the door handle?
This is the big one. If your euro cylinder (the barrel the key goes into) protrudes beyond the door furniture, it can be gripped with pliers and snapped in under 30 seconds. Cylinder snapping is the most common burglary method in Belfast. You won't hear it. There'll be no broken glass. The door will just open.
Fix: Measure your cylinder. If it protrudes, replace it with a correctly sized anti-snap cylinder flush with the door furniture.
2. Is it a standard cylinder with no anti-snap protection?
Even if your cylinder isn't protruding, standard euro cylinders offer little resistance to snapping. If your cylinder doesn't have "anti-snap", "TS007", or "BS EN 1303" markings on the packaging or the cylinder itself, it's likely a standard cylinder.
Fix: Upgrade to a BS EN 1303 certified anti-snap cylinder. It's a 20-minute job and one of the best security investments you can make.
3. How many levers does your mortice lock have?
If you have a traditional mortice lock on a wooden door, check how many levers it has. Two or three-lever locks offer minimal security and won't meet most insurance requirements. You need at least five levers (BS3621 standard) for genuine security and insurance compliance.
Fix: Replace with a BS3621 five-lever mortice deadlock.
4. What's your strike plate like?
The strike plate is the metal plate on the door frame where the lock bolt lands. Most homes have thin, factory-fitted strike plates held in with short screws. A well-placed kick can rip this out in one go — the door opens even with the lock engaged.
Fix: Replace with a reinforced box strike plate, fixed with 75mm screws into the wall stud.
5. Are your hinges exposed?
On doors that open outward, exposed hinges can be popped with a screwdriver. Check whether your hinges are on the outside of the door — and whether they have hinge bolts fitted.
Fix: Fit hinge bolts (also called dog bolts) to prevent the door being lifted off its hinges.
